Perspective

I got an interesting, if obvious, thought on this little trip. Funerals aren't meant to be fun; they are, however, exactly what you make of them.Maxine B led a long and interesting life -- she also left behind many, many cool people. It might seem blasphemous to say, but I had fun over the past weekend seeing people I've never seen from En's family and reconnecting with people I rarely see. Maxine's last gift to us all was family and fun. It is not a commemoration of someone's death, it's a celebration of one's life.

A funeral is what is made of it. The dead no longer have a say in the matter. If the living chose to remember the dead in a somber, sullen way then that is exactly how the living will remember the dead. You see, the funeral, is for the living only. On the other hand if the living gather together and celebrate in memory of fallen, how will the memories be kept? For all the good events of the past, of course. The past is what you make of it. You can go through your life treasuring the bad and mis-steps of everyone in your life bringing depression you yourself and those you surround yourself with. Alternately you can treasure all that is good about the past and live for the future. It is a decision each of us must make. The past is. The past and can not be changed. There is good. There is bad. All that can be had is learning. If you do nothing but look at the bad... well... you might very well be on your own by pushing away everyone else who looks at the past for the good instead.
