Teardown Tuesday: Hot Tub - Part 1

My friend Gabe and I attacked the hot tub last night after work.A few points we noticed:

  • The hot tub shell -- the fiberglass part -- is actually quite thin
  • This fiberglass is also really frickin' abrasive to saw blades. A blade seems to get dull in around 30 seconds of cutting. I'll buy a carbide-tipped blade to see if it makes a difference.
  • It's also damn tough. We tried to drill a hole to drain a puddle and a drill barely did anything to it.
  • Tubing is really rather hard to cut with a saw. It just flaps back and forth without the blade really grabbing onto it.

The tub still had a bit of water in some hollows. Gabe started bashing it with a big axe. It took several good hits to put a crack in it.The tools:Primarily:Before:First we took off the sides of the tub that we had access to. The mechanicals panel is on the right side of the above picture. We can get to that via the removable floor panel in front of it. The left and back sides are just open so that was easy.As far as we got on day one:<sigh/>  :-(More to do...I also have the main control board, so that'll be another adventure to see how it works.  :-)[smugmug url="http://photos.vec.com/hack/feed.mg?Type=gallery&Data=22503940_h2bL5B&format=rss200" imagecount="100" start="1" num="100" thumbsize="Th" link="smugmug-lightbox" captions="false" sort="false" window="true" smugmug="true" size="L"]
