HVAC

This is the week or two for HVAC in the new house of ours. Our house in Solon started off with a way outdated furnace and AC that barely (if at all) worked. We swapped out all that in short order once we realized that in the summer things were way (way, way) too hot to handle. With that setup came an awesome little thermostat.Unlike the 90% of the folks that don't program a thermostat, I was one of the 10% that did. So we came to the Seattle house this summer. It had an old-school mercury thermostat. This, in the summertime, doesn't mean squat since we don't have AC. Once the heating season arrived I couldn't help but feel guilty; there's no reason to heat the house to full temperature when we're not home

Then we fired up the fireplaces.

Mmmm...Then the fan for the fireplace kicked on with a metal clatter.  :-/  The stupid squirrel cage fan it rattling things. I guess most people wouldn't mind, but I really can't stand rattles.

So, where we are right now is a scheduling a service call for the fireplace. That's not nearly as exciting as the new Nest!  :-PIf the existing wires would've been an inch longer it would have installed in 5 minutes. But I had to do a janky soldering job to add a few more inches onto the ends. C'est la vie. Most of the time was spent looking for the mini torch and solder than doing the work.I'll have a more detailed writeup of the Nest's installation in the next couple of days and a more detailed review after I've lived with it for a bit. So far I have to say that it's pretty sexy!
