HTML5

So, finally I can come out about what I've been working for quite a while here at Amazon. We have, just today, announced that we're ready to publish HTML5 apps on Android devices. Now, you probably know that I'm not a fan of the Android ecosystem. In some ways the reason I don't like it is because it doesn't seem like a whole, but a series of fragmented parts. What we're doing is allowing HTML5 apps to be a first-class citizen in the Android environment. What we're doing is providing new Chromium runtime that'll work on our Amazon Kindle devices. This will be a hella lot better than native webview that comes with most Android doodads. On top of that we're giving developers the ability to monetize their apps on the platform we're providing. Now, you might think we're doing things in some craptastic proprietary way but you'd be wrong. We doing this with the standards. Even the in-app purchasing is done with JavaScript from the developer's perspective. Sure, we have some secret sauce in there to get things working, but we've worked hard to insulate the developers from anything that is custom. If you make HTML5 apps, check it out! If you need a hand or some help, feel free to reach out to me and I'll get you started!
