Ask For What You Want

This is something that was really driven home for me over the weekend.Of course everyone knows that you should ask for what you want, right?Yes and no.We're trained to expect a no and not even bother for the most part. We're trained to ask for less and hope to get that. The thing is that if you ask for what you want, there's a chance that you might get it -- or at least more than you had expected beforehand. Not just that but if you ask for less, you might get less even though you could have gotten more.Another angle that you might get:"So, can you do X for me?""Not right now, but how would you feel about Y?"If you ask, you might get something awesome. You might get something different. You might not get anything at all, but at least you asked.Worse is assuming that you can do X without asking. Don't go there.

"You're a big boy, ask for what you want."It, honestly, is easier said than done. We're (ok, at least I'm) so programmed to not want to bother people with what I want that I don't ask. Or I ask in a wishy-washy way. Or I just ask for what I think I can get.I asked. I didn't demure. I got what I wanted -- which made everyone happy.  :-D

Here's another good write-up on the topic.
